2011-12-15 15:21:25 <TD> darn. i was about to implement parsing/verifying of alert messages :)
2011-12-15 15:21:27 <gmaxwell> There are a lot of scattered bits here and there, but I'm not aware of any broad writeups. I'm also not sure I follow ByteCoin's concern: If you're remembering C is rembering the details required to find the public parts of A&B really that much of a big barrier?
2011-12-15 15:21:48 <lianj> TD: hehe me too
2011-12-15 15:21:49 <TD> gavinandresen: would you consider establishing a longer lived alert?
2011-12-15 15:21:50 <gavinandresen> I don't think so (I'm writing a reply to his latest post now)
2011-12-15 15:22:26 <gavinandresen> TD: well... unfortunately the testnet doesn't have a separate CAlert signing key from main net....
2011-12-15 15:22:54 <gavinandresen> ... so SOMEBODY (cough gmaxwell cough) could broadcast it on the main net
2011-12-15 15:22:54 <TD> oh, i see. so the concern is that it might get "migrated" by somebody?
2011-12-15 15:22:54 <gmaxwell> (obviously you can use one of the determinstic schemes to generate A ... B is less clear. B could just be a well known service pubkey * A.

2011-12-15 16:45:45 <gavinandresen> Today's a good day to do that (it's my birthday!)
2011-12-15 16:45:56 <gmaxwell> ah. thats hair splitting, I think, but it doesn't appear that you have a lot invested in that key... so sure. And happy birthday!

2011-12-15 16:47:08 <rasengan> Happy Birthday :-)
2011-12-15 16:47:32 <gavinandresen> gmaxwell: I agree it is hair-splitting, but if I'm going to go to the effort of asking people to sign, I might as well generate a slightly-more-secure key.

2011-12-15 21:04:05 <copumpkin> I was running it with no hard drive, and booting it off a usb key. Unfortunately, the linux install was unable to shut down correctly, and just froze every time I asked it to shut down/restart. And every time I shut it down, my filesystem got progressively more corrupt (for a long time I had to use IPs for my pool because the directory entry for resolv.conf got screwed up, so I couldn't read it but couldn't delete/replace it either)
2011-12-15 21:04:17 <copumpkin> eventually, the fs got so fucked that the machine didn't boot anymore

2011-12-15 21:14:29 <copumpkin> it was already read-only is what was weird
2011-12-15 21:14:49 <copumpkin> it was some weird setup using an obscure compress filesystem that lived on an image in a fat32 partition so you could use the usb key for other stuff too
2011-12-15 21:14:54 <copumpkin> *compressed
2011-12-15 21:15:30 <Eliel> ok, then it sounds strange, unless it's the fat32 partition that got corrupted.
2011-12-15 21:15:30 <copumpkin> the fact that it was obscure is why I didn't have an fsck or similar for it
2011-12-15 21:16:01 <Eliel> I mean, if it's read-only, the image file should still be intact?
