2013-05-25 00:27:50 <phantomcircuit> interesting
2013-05-25 00:28:05 <sipa> what 'sendrawtransaction' does, is submit to the local mempool
2013-05-25 00:28:08 <sipa> if that fails, it fails
2013-05-25 00:28:20 <sipa> it's straightforward, but counterintuitive as why it can fail sometimes
2013-05-25 00:28:41 <phantomcircuit> sipa, it should be fairly straightforward to check if the tx is already in a block

2013-05-25 00:29:23 <phantomcircuit> sipa, what you care about is that the outputs haven't already been spent
2013-05-25 00:29:41 <phantomcircuit> well not impossible but ludicrously slow to check if the exact same tx hasn't been spent yet

2013-05-25 00:31:54 <phantomcircuit> you're right it's definitely not a deadlock

2013-05-25 00:33:14 <phantomcircuit> well
2013-05-25 00:33:19 <phantomcircuit> it's "deadlocked"
2013-05-25 00:33:23 <sipa> ok

2013-05-25 00:33:55 <sipa> there is locking code outside of the normal sync framework
2013-05-25 00:34:35 <phantomcircuit> i know leveldb doesn't allow multiple access
2013-05-25 00:34:47 <phantomcircuit> but is that per process or per thread
2013-05-25 00:34:56 <phantomcircuit> ie is the library thread safe
2013-05-25 00:34:57 <sipa> it does thread-level locking
2013-05-25 00:35:08 <sipa> but leveldb shouldn't be doing callbacks afaik
2013-05-25 00:35:14 <sipa> so lock inversion is impossible there
2013-05-25 00:35:17 <phantomcircuit> hmm so possibly there's an issue there

2013-05-25 03:17:01 <Tril> yeah so maporphan overflow. restarting bitcoind.
2013-05-25 03:17:12 <sipa> why?
2013-05-25 03:17:13 <Tril> had 10000 orphan tx.
2013-05-25 03:17:20 <sipa> yes?
2013-05-25 03:17:48 <sipa> it automatically drop txn from the orphan pool when it overflow
2013-05-25 03:17:53 <gmaxwell> Tril: that should be normal, harmless, and uninteresting. What made you think it was a problem?
2013-05-25 03:18:07 <Tril> it was. but it was not responding to RPC quickly enough to mine on it
2013-05-25 03:18:31 <sipa> that has nothing to do with the orphan pool
2013-05-25 03:18:34 <gmaxwell> That should have nothing to do with orphans, they aren't considered while mining.
2013-05-25 03:18:36 <sipa> but with the mempool
2013-05-25 03:18:44 <gmaxwell> ^. What version are you on?
2013-05-25 03:18:58 <sipa> and try 0.8.2rc2, it has some performance improvements for that
2013-05-25 03:19:16 <gmaxwell> 0.8.2rc3 :P
2013-05-25 03:19:27 <sipa> dang, seems my jalapeno is already in .ch
2013-05-25 03:19:31 <gmaxwell> !
2013-05-25 03:19:40 <Tril> 0.8.1, poolsz was 3280 when I shut it down

2013-05-25 04:36:15 <Populus> Hey
2013-05-25 04:37:35 <Populus> I made a transaction almost 12 hours ago before I went to bed to an exchange for 1.6 BTC. It has not appeared in blockchain or blockexplorer, my wallet application says it has been seen by 1 peer but it has not been received at my exchange. It should take 1 hour. I used a fee of 0.0001 btc and changed it to 0.0005 btc a few minutes ago to see if it would help but alas it did not.

2013-05-25 11:19:19 <superkuh> Hi. I used bitcoin-qt v0.8.1.0-g34d62a8-beta and foolishly sent 2 (old, mature) bitcoins to a Mt. Gox address with no transaction fees while my client was not fully sync'd to the blockchain. That was 3 days ago and I had fully sync'd a day later and let it sit. It didn't go out onto the network so in the blockchain I still have the coins but my client refuses to acknowledge this. I've deleted my entire profile (except wallet.dat) and redown
2013-05-25 11:19:19 <superkuh> loaded and the 16 GB blockchain and let my client sit open for another day. With my wallet.dat the client still thinks the coins are gone so I can't use them even if in reality the blockchain shows they aren't sent (I sent to 1P54f19aGENzhjURVpQyRVXp2Bf7dZNad2, which shows no coins ever being received).
2013-05-25 11:19:43 <superkuh> So... I've reinstalled and fresh sync'd up, and my client still hasn't sent the transaction out on to the network or, for some reason, no one has confirmed it. I get 12 peers on the network and can confirm lots of traffic on 8333 via wireshark. http://superkuh.com/screenshot.png How do I debug or fix this?

2013-05-25 11:25:50 <jaakkos> superkuh: so you imported an old wallet to v0.8.1.0-g34d62a8-beta and started synching from beginning?
2013-05-25 11:25:57 <superkuh> Yes.
2013-05-25 11:25:58 <jaakkos> superkuh: and during that synch you sent 2 coins
2013-05-25 11:26:02 <superkuh> No.
2013-05-25 11:26:50 <superkuh> I mined coins a year or two ago. I had these coins confirmed from the bit of the old blockchain I had on disk on the 22nd. I sent 2 coins at that time when I was not sync'd.
2013-05-25 11:27:15 <superkuh> Then I caught up and let my client sit for a day.
2013-05-25 11:27:21 <superkuh> But the transaction never went through.
2013-05-25 11:27:35 <superkuh> It was suggested I delete my profile and start fresh with my existing wallet.
2013-05-25 11:27:45 <superkuh> I did so and re-downloaded the blockchain and everything.
2013-05-25 11:28:02 <superkuh> Then I let it sit connected to the network for about a day again.
2013-05-25 11:28:10 <superkuh> And the transaction still hasn't appeared.
2013-05-25 11:29:40 <jaakkos> well, i was thinking of something that i've seen happen: if you import an old wallet and start synching, but before full synch you send coins, you may end up in trouble, because sending at that point may attempt to send coins that you have already spent. this is because the chain is not synched so it didn't know they were already spent
2013-05-25 11:30:09 phma has joined
2013-05-25 11:30:34 <superkuh> I did accidentally load an old wallet.dat on the 22nd. But I did not send coins from it.
2013-05-25 11:30:36 <jaakkos> that will create a tx that will never confirm; and it may often even reduce your balance because one or more of that tx's inputs were actually legit, unspent coins, but now bitcoin-qt has "tied" them to the invalid tx.
2013-05-25 11:30:44 <superkuh> FUCK.
2013-05-25 11:31:06 <jaakkos> anyway
2013-05-25 11:31:28 <jaakkos> try bitcoin-qt -salvagewallet
2013-05-25 11:31:33 <jaakkos> it's supposed to fix that
2013-05-25 11:31:41 <superkuh> Okay. Thank you. I will try.
2013-05-25 11:32:20 <superkuh> Should bitcoin-qt just open briefly then close instantly when I do that?
2013-05-25 11:32:32 <jaakkos> i don't actually know - i never had to use that option
2013-05-25 11:32:45 <jaakkos> back up your wallet before doing anything though
2013-05-25 11:33:06 <superkuh> Yeah. It deleted everything.

2013-05-25 11:38:05 <superkuh> Or, will uploading to an online wallet service help?

2013-05-25 11:44:56 <jaakkos> if that wallet was never used elsewhere and you didn't delete the block chain, then doing that should be ok, even when it's not synched.

2013-05-25 15:23:50 <runeks> BCB: Thanks. But I'd really like to not depend on blockchain.info. So preferably some tool that parses local block chain data. That way it's more resilient (and I can adapt it to suit my needs, instead of relying on the pre-defined requests available to the blockchain.info black box).
2013-05-25 15:24:14 <jouke> runeks: to your own addresses?
2013-05-25 15:24:50 <runeks> jouke: Yes, I own the address. But I'd really like to not let the tool know of the private key (since this isn't really necessary).
2013-05-25 15:25:13 <runeks> I know Bitcoin Qt can monitor addresses, but only if they're in the wallet, AFAIK.
2013-05-25 15:27:33 <jouke> well, when the wallet is encrypted, it kinda does not know the private key
2013-05-25 15:28:15 <runeks> Yeah, I guess that's a good point. And I wouldn't need to decrypt it in order to get the information.
2013-05-25 15:29:43 <runeks> The only problem is that the private key is part of a deterministic wallet, so it's possible that if an attacker gets the key, he could figure out my entire wallet. Or at least that's how I understand it.

2013-05-25 16:31:26 <btcls> ***** changing bitcoin protocols is analogous to changing the rules of chess. A person could propose that horses/knights move differently â but the global chess community would probably not accept the rule change (but it is not impossible?).

2013-05-25 22:54:41 <skfax> I just found it odd that the example shown for 2 inputs of 5 BTC with 10 confirmations + 2 BTC with 3 confirmations gives a priority of 11,200,000 if the required limit is 57,600,000
2013-05-25 22:55:45 <sipa> yes, to be included in a block
2013-05-25 22:55:51 <sipa> note that that is just a local client policy
2013-05-25 22:56:01 <sipa> it's not illegal to have othere trzansactions in a block
2013-05-25 22:56:08 <sipa> it's just somethin the reference client won't do

2013-05-25 22:57:00 <skfax> it just sounded like the given example transaction should satisfy as a valid transaction, but it is below the limit?

2013-05-25 23:08:25 <Luke-Jr> skfax: the whole "priority" thing is a Satoshi codebase policy
2013-05-25 23:08:34 <Luke-Jr> skfax: it doesn't exist in the real bitcoin protocol at all
2013-05-25 23:09:23 <skfax> ok cool
2013-05-25 23:09:25 <skfax> But when it comes to creating a raw transaction with a correct fee, are there any good strategies? Or would it basically be: 0) i = 1, 1) set up the inputs/outputs with a i * 0.0005 fee, 2) create the raw + sign the raw, 3) check size of signed raw, if larger than i * 1k bytes, goto step 1
2013-05-25 23:10:06 <sipa> the base idea is 1 BTC*day destroyed for a normal 250 byte tx
2013-05-25 23:10:36 <skfax> yeah, that makes sense. that a given transaction would "time-out" at some point
