2014-06-05 04:48:21 <wumpus> Michail1: that's usually a matter of setting up the environment right before launching the command, just log output to a file and see where the start fails
2014-06-05 04:48:59 <wumpus> Michail1: ie, cron will have a much more limited environment set up than your user, think of things like PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH etc
2014-06-05 04:53:49 <Michail1> Thanks, I have even tried to have cron write a shell script of it's own and run it. still it fails (no errors). If I started the script it runs, then it works fine, but simply not from cron.
2014-06-05 04:55:56 <Michail1> If I type in the command from shell, it works. If I copy that exactly to s.sh and have cron run s.sh, still no go. Missing something, but no errors. Even redirect output to dump.txt (simply makes a blank file and does nothing). It's not stuck running in memory or anything, but by having the dump.txt even exist shows it at least getting to the command.

2014-06-05 04:59:20 <Michail1> script.
2014-06-05 04:59:32 <Michail1> cron runs check-bitcoind
2014-06-05 05:00:23 <Michail1> check-bitcoind runs fine (check if bitcoind is running and if not then starts it) If running it will then check for npm/insight. If not running, it will run insight.sh
2014-06-05 05:00:58 <Michail1> insight.sh sets up variables, then tries to run (I know it gets this far, because it makes the empty dump.txt)

2014-06-05 06:39:43 <Luke-Jr> moarrr: my guess would be you ran BCCore as root at some point, probably with su or sudo
2014-06-05 06:39:50 <Luke-Jr> and therefore the file is owned by root
2014-06-05 06:40:13 <wumpus> yes it may be a permissions issue, or disk corruptioin, either way you'll find out more by trying to read the fiel
2014-06-05 06:40:17 <moarrr> yeh works fine, 7837b9...
2014-06-05 06:40:40 <moarrr> nope Luke-Jr, i ran it as my main user

2014-06-05 12:45:18 <Jouke> oh
2014-06-05 12:45:20 <BlueMatt> this certainly looks like it could effect us, no?
2014-06-05 12:45:21 <Jouke> damn you BlueMatt
2014-06-05 12:45:24 <BlueMatt> :)
2014-06-05 12:45:42 <wumpus> yes, I've already seen it, guess 0.9.2rc2 will have a new openssl version...
2014-06-05 12:45:52 <wumpus> anything that affects ecdsa?
2014-06-05 12:46:21 <wumpus> not in 1.0.1 at least
2014-06-05 12:46:21 <BlueMatt> dont think so, but another tls bug
2014-06-05 12:46:30 <BlueMatt> so...important for payment protocol
2014-06-05 12:46:33 <BlueMatt> not so much anything else
2014-06-05 12:46:36 <Jouke> and rpc
2014-06-05 12:46:41 <wumpus> right
2014-06-05 12:47:03 <wumpus> well at least no memory leak this time :-)
2014-06-05 12:47:04 <sipa> i don't think anything but ssl is affected
2014-06-05 12:47:06 <BlueMatt> indeed
2014-06-05 12:47:20 <wumpus> payment requests are signed themselves
2014-06-05 12:47:20 <sipa> apart from the side-channel attack fix, but that's a nice to have :)
2014-06-05 12:47:41 <wumpus> the side-channel fix was already in 1.0.1g
2014-06-05 12:47:45 <wumpus> or is there a new one?
2014-06-05 12:50:05 <wumpus> anyhow having to upgrade openssl because of critical vulnerabilities is starting to be a monthly occurence

2014-06-05 12:50:30 <mircea_popescu> so how's the "payments protocol" thing coming along ?
2014-06-05 12:50:33 pierreatwork has joined
2014-06-05 12:51:32 <wumpus> payment protocol shouldn't be affected, payment messages are signed themselves and don't rely on the transport protocol to provide MiTM protection
2014-06-05 12:51:50 <mircea_popescu> is that so ?
2014-06-05 12:52:40 <sipa> rpcssl may be affected in theory
2014-06-05 12:52:45 <hearn> payment messages _can_ be signed
2014-06-05 12:52:51 <hearn> and in practice today, always are
2014-06-05 12:52:52 <mircea_popescu> why even use ssl at all then.
2014-06-05 12:52:57 <hearn> however in theory it's optional
2014-06-05 12:53:02 <mircea_popescu> right.
2014-06-05 12:53:07 <hearn> mircea_popescu: privacy, mostly
2014-06-05 12:53:29 <wumpus> in theory it's optional, but not signing your payment requests is a major stink already

2014-06-05 12:54:26 <mircea_popescu> right. generally speaking, bitcoin is lucky most everyone with any weight has been ignoring the braindamage you put out since about .6 or so. but do carry on, the lulz are appreciated.
2014-06-05 12:54:34 <wumpus> using ssl is optional, on the other hand, the payment protocol is designed to be used over various kinds of transport, most non secure in themselves

2014-06-05 14:23:44 <hearn> i don't think you have thought this through, at all. if you were sent an inv, you'd just request them with a getdata immediately anyway. data processed is the same. inv exists to reduce bandwidth usage by avoiding downloading the same tx/block data many times. however when sending a tx you originate, you know your peers don't have it and would have to request it
2014-06-05 14:23:56 <hearn> bitcoin core still uses inv to announce those for privacy reasons: to try and hide that it originated the transaction

2014-06-05 22:48:26 <sipa> phantomcircuit: you can't have a pointer to a reference
2014-06-05 22:48:29 <phantomcircuit> iirc there's some bizarreness that can be done there that would theoretically work
2014-06-05 22:48:37 <sipa> reference is a property of a variable, not of its type
2014-06-05 22:49:20 <gmaxwell> Hasimir: we're aware of it, but I don't consider it /terribly/ important. (E.g. no reason to "fast track" anything)

2014-06-05 22:49:37 <sipa> it seems to only affect rpcssl
2014-06-05 22:49:41 <sipa> potentially
2014-06-05 22:49:53 <Hasimir> even though every node on 1.0.0g or earlier is affected
2014-06-05 22:50:08 <gmaxwell> Hasimir: uh no, thats not true.
2014-06-05 22:50:15 <gmaxwell> Hasimir: we don't use SSL generally.
2014-06-05 22:50:33 <Hasimir> okay then ...
2014-06-05 22:51:02 <gmaxwell> It's used by rpcssl which is virtually used by no one, and it's used by the payment protocol client, and in the payment protocol the x509 signatures should generally moot problems there.

2014-06-05 23:45:14 <sipa> they are intended to be arch independent
2014-06-05 23:45:20 <sipa> the ARM issue, afaik, is a bug
2014-06-05 23:45:25 <cfields> that kind of incompat makes my skin itch at night
2014-06-05 23:45:50 <sipa> the leveldb sst and log file format are well defined up the byte level
2014-06-05 23:46:21 <cfields> ok good, that was my understanding

2014-06-05 23:46:44 <sipa> i think the first step should be filing a bug upstream
