2014-08-04 01:09:03 <sipa> we have this annoying thing called an economy that makes it very hard to actually experiment still, but hey, it has upsides too
2014-08-04 01:09:34 <earlz> but yea, it is quite scary how much money is in bitcoin, while bitcoin itself is only a few years old
2014-08-04 01:09:46 <earlz> it's even scarying looking at altcoins lol
2014-08-04 01:09:57 <sipa> i do agree that 0.10 somehow feels much less advanced than 0.9
2014-08-04 01:10:08 <earlz> fast syncing sounds awesome :)
2014-08-04 01:10:19 <ywecur> Are there any major innovations left to be added at this point or is maintenence mainly what's left?
2014-08-04 01:10:20 <sipa> but that's just because we incorrectly see 0.9 as a decimal, rather than a dotted sequence of numbers
2014-08-04 01:10:48 <ywecur> exactly
2014-08-04 01:11:00 <sipa> ywecur: i think most of the actual innovations will be things in the ecosystem, not necessarily in the reference software
2014-08-04 01:11:17 <sipa> and development of the network and its protocol rules also happens somewhat independently of the development of the client software
2014-08-04 01:11:38 <sipa> but yes, there is a lot left to do... efficiency improvements, dos protection, resource management, ...
2014-08-04 01:11:58 <earlz> My understanding is a lot of innovations are not intended to ever be implemented in the reference client
2014-08-04 01:11:58 <sipa> there are many features to be experimented with, like more featureful scripting languages
2014-08-04 01:12:17 <sipa> depends what they are about
2014-08-04 01:13:07 <ywecur> With floating fees coming about now, do you guys see any future for micro transactions in bitcoin?
2014-08-04 01:13:31 <sipa> bitcoin (on chain) doesn't work for microtransactions
2014-08-04 01:13:39 <earlz> a turing complete scripting language I still think would be fun
2014-08-04 01:13:51 <sipa> it would be horror, i think
2014-08-04 01:13:53 <earlz> floating fees?
2014-08-04 01:14:27 <sipa> dos protection and economic incentives for node running turn very hard when you can't reason about limitations anymore (which turing completeness implies)
2014-08-04 01:14:54 <sipa> floating fees = the network tries to determine what fees are necessary for network propagation and getting mined
2014-08-04 01:14:59 <earlz> ah
2014-08-04 01:14:59 <sipa> rather than being hardcoded
2014-08-04 01:15:09 <earlz> doesn't that complicate services quite a bit?
2014-08-04 01:15:25 <sipa> they'll have to live with it at some point
2014-08-04 01:15:31 <sipa> better now than later
2014-08-04 01:16:00 <earlz> Not to alt-talk, but I'm a part in a coin that tried fees done on a percentage, rather than a static number
2014-08-04 01:16:10 <earlz> exchanges and many other services had a lot of problems with it
2014-08-04 01:16:12 <sipa> that makes no sense
2014-08-04 01:16:27 <sipa> the cost to the network is not proportional to the value transferred
2014-08-04 01:16:49 <earlz> yea, I see that now heh, and the idea seems to have failed anyway
2014-08-04 01:17:07 <sipa> in bitcoin, fees have always been proportional to transaction size
2014-08-04 01:17:10 <earlz> but either way, having fees that differ significantly makes things complicated
2014-08-04 01:17:24 <sipa> well it's inevitable that things will get more complicated there
2014-08-04 01:17:27 <ywecur> Wow that's to bad. I mean I get that the blockchain is a public resource but I'd hate to see more power go to centralized companies like Coinbase because of it
2014-08-04 01:17:41 <gmaxwell> ywecur: that doesn't follow
2014-08-04 01:17:46 <sipa> ywecur: there are several in-between solutions
2014-08-04 01:17:47 <gmaxwell> also this is now far offtopic for this channel
2014-08-04 01:19:11 <earlz> how far can the fees vary with this new fee mechanism?

2014-08-04 01:19:53 <gmaxwell> earlz: all the floating fees stuff does is gives the wallet advice about recent fees and what would be required to be competative with them.
2014-08-04 01:20:14 <ywecur> gmaxwell: Sorry boss :)
2014-08-04 01:21:29 <earlz> I mean how much can they vary? Like would it ever go to 10 times the minimum relay feeor some such?
2014-08-04 01:21:39 <earlz> or does it stay fairly low no matter what?
2014-08-04 01:22:45 <sipa> earlz: if necessary, it will certainly need to go 10x the minimum relay fee
2014-08-04 01:22:59 <sipa> it depends on the ecosystem
2014-08-04 01:24:13 <earlz> Well that's the thing. Exchanges and such commonly charge for fees by using a rough estimate and a float. So like they calc that on average, fees are 0.0002.. So, that's what they charge, sometimes is 0.0001 and sometimes it's 0.0003 of course
2014-08-04 01:24:40 <earlz> would such a floating fee structure make that unworkable though, by having a large amount of variance each block?
2014-08-04 01:24:45 <earlz> or each transaction?
2014-08-04 01:25:09 <gmaxwell> earlz: the floating fees doesn't change the network behavior
2014-08-04 01:25:19 <gmaxwell> someone could continue to happily apply a static fee
2014-08-04 01:25:40 <earlz> so it's basically if you don't want that, just don't upgrade to 0.10?
2014-08-04 01:25:41 <gmaxwell> (not to say that such a fee would be competative, but thats true regardless of the floating fee stuff)

2014-08-04 01:25:46 <gmaxwell> ...
2014-08-04 01:25:53 <gmaxwell> no just change the setting
2014-08-04 01:26:14 <sipa> or use a different wallet (almost everyone does already anyway)
2014-08-04 01:26:15 <earlz> yea if they were using old static fees though as well, they might get huge transaction lag or other such problems
2014-08-04 01:26:19 <earlz> hmm
2014-08-04 01:26:31 <sipa> maybe the floating fees grow into a policy on the network that multiple wallets implement
2014-08-04 01:26:32 <gmaxwell> earlz: prior to the floating fee stuff the default in bitcoin-qt was _no fee_. The floating fee stuff just adds a market estimation function, and makes the default a market fee.
2014-08-04 01:26:34 <earlz> tough problem
2014-08-04 01:26:49 <sipa> and i do expect that floating fees will cause problems
2014-08-04 01:27:04 <sipa> but in the long term, we need something like that anyway
2014-08-04 01:27:30 <earlz> infrastructure just needs to catch up
2014-08-04 01:27:51 <gmaxwell> well the given estimation function is so/so, there are no magical solutions though... also the default being to bid for immediate confirms might also drive the fee market up.
2014-08-04 01:28:07 <earlz> it's hard though, since there is no easy way (with the reference wallet) of knowing exact transaction fee before sending atransaction
2014-08-04 01:28:29 <sipa> if you use raw transactions you can
2014-08-04 01:28:34 <gmaxwell> then again there are a bunch of wallets that pay really high fees by default, because they don't have a size estimation loop and because of ???, and that hasn't seemed to cause fee rallies.
2014-08-04 01:28:52 <gmaxwell> sipa: or coin control.

2014-08-04 01:29:53 <gmaxwell> raw transactions / listunspent / listaddressgroupings are the functionality. I think the only thing missing is the priority estimator.

2014-08-04 12:02:24 <chichov> P2PK, P2PKH, P2SH, Multisig and Nulldata
2014-08-04 12:02:42 <michagogo> What do you mean by "in conjunction"?
2014-08-04 12:02:55 <chichov> well, it's an embedded type, so you use it together with another type
2014-08-04 12:03:10 <chichov> say P2SH with Multisig
2014-08-04 12:03:19 <michagogo> a P2SH scripthash can be anything
2014-08-04 12:03:26 <chichov> even nulldata? heh
2014-08-04 12:03:32 <michagogo> (well, except for another P2SH -- I don't think you can nest them)
2014-08-04 12:03:52 <chichov> just wondering how that would evaluate
2014-08-04 12:03:53 <michagogo> Yes, you can hash "OP_RETURN <data>" and send to that scripthash
2014-08-04 12:04:03 <michagogo> But that would be pointless

2014-08-04 12:04:10 <michagogo> Well, FSVO pointless
2014-08-04 12:04:22 <chichov> wow, spendable nulldata transactions
2014-08-04 12:04:24 <michagogo> The data in question would never make it onto the blockchain
2014-08-04 12:04:28 <michagogo> No, not spendable
2014-08-04 12:04:40 <chichov> how come?
2014-08-04 12:04:48 <michagogo> The UTXO wouldn't be spendable, but it wouldn't appear spendable either
2014-08-04 12:05:00 <michagogo> erm, appear unspendable*
2014-08-04 12:05:18 <chichov> hm, you would be able to create a valid tx output with P2SH Nulldata
2014-08-04 12:05:27 <michagogo> what do you mean "valid"
2014-08-04 12:05:35 <chichov> that it would pass all the sanity checks
2014-08-04 12:05:40 <michagogo> What sanity checks?

2014-08-04 12:06:27 <michagogo> Um, if you're looking at the transaction/blockchain, the output is just another P2SH
2014-08-04 12:06:32 <chichov> exactly
2014-08-04 12:06:40 <michagogo> No way to know that it's anything different unless you have the script
2014-08-04 12:06:46 <chichov> now, what would happen if you try to create a corresponding input script?
2014-08-04 12:06:56 <michagogo> You can't spend it, though
2014-08-04 12:07:11 <chichov> where would it fail?
2014-08-04 12:07:14 <michagogo> Just like with a non-P2SH OP_RETURN
2014-08-04 12:07:25 <michagogo> At the point that the OP_RETURN is executed
2014-08-04 12:07:34 <chichov> indeed
2014-08-04 12:07:36 <amaclin> chichov, have a look here:http://webbtc.com/stats (line: P2SH Types) I am not sure that OP_RETURN in p2sh is a good idea :)

2014-08-04 19:16:27 <lodewijkadlp> Okay, so, I have this service called bitshops.net. It will host client-side encrypted webshops. Seemed much simpler than it is. Uses AES and NTRUcrypt now, quantum computer proof! Everything is in place up to the point where the Bitcoin stuff really starts happening. You can create, browse, make orders. The orders need to take money. The money should at some point be withdrawn by the storeowners.

2014-08-04 19:39:16 <lodewijkadlp> I just want to do A, B, C. Don't give me a fat stack with up to Z in it.
2014-08-04 19:39:30 <sipa> if you want to accept money from others, and do it safely, you should at least run a full node you can trust
2014-08-04 19:39:50 <sipa> you don't need to use its wallet - there are many other imomementations these days
2014-08-04 19:39:53 <lodewijkadlp> I also want to be able to separate a public key server from a private key server, for scalability. But that's longer term.
2014-08-04 19:40:15 <lodewijkadlp> running a full node hardly improves security

2014-08-04 19:43:09 <lodewijkadlp> maybe btcd?
2014-08-04 19:43:30 <sipa> i'd still run it behind a bitcoind, but i'm biased as a bitcoind developer
2014-08-04 19:44:06 <sipa> i think there are several more useful wallet implementations out there, and the one in bitcoind is lagging behind
2014-08-04 19:44:22 <sipa> but as a full node, you need it imho
2014-08-04 19:44:27 <dhill> btcd and bitcoind are full node clients. there is btcwallet, but that requires a btcd node. adding SPV support to btcwallet is on the todo list.
