2014-12-09 04:15:02 <rusty> b-itcoinssg: they mention the receiving sidechain evaluating the work, with the strong implication taht they're both using the same hashing algo. I expect we'll see merge mining and SHA256(SHA256()).
2014-12-09 04:17:50 <b-itcoinssg> rusty: right, so within that proposed implementation, there isn't a clear way to incorporate another proof of work for the sidechain right?
2014-12-09 04:18:21 <b-itcoinssg> rusty: I'm just trying to wrap my head around it, not a criticism per say.
2014-12-09 04:18:54 <rusty> b-itcoinssg: there's nothing stopping it either. The discussion paper is a long way from am actual BIP.
2014-12-09 04:19:09 <b-itcoinssg> rusty: i see
2014-12-09 04:20:11 <rusty> b-itcoinssg: as long as whatever rules go into the new bitcoin sidechain operator can understand the sidechain, it'd work. In practice, this probably means the sidechain has to look a lot like bitcoin.
2014-12-09 04:21:01 <rusty> b-itcoinssg: since bitcoin clients would have to evaluate the PoW for the sidechain, I think there'd be some pressure against other PoWs.

2014-12-09 04:23:00 <amiller> IMO there's gonna be equal interest in merge-mined sidechains and non-merge mine side chains with incompatible pow

2014-12-09 04:24:04 <amiller> the proposed implementation seems oblivious to whether it's merge mined or not
2014-12-09 04:24:07 <rusty> amiller: that may be true, but I expect that's going to be an interesting debate for every new pow.
2014-12-09 04:24:31 <amiller> probably
2014-12-09 04:26:14 <rusty> amiller: it's not detailed enough to tell. You need to know if it's merge mined, because you need to evaluate a tx proof. There are also many other possible variants (such as including the fee amount in the hash), but expect sidechains will just have carry a bitcoin-like merkle tree.
2014-12-09 04:27:19 <amiller> yeah, i guess there are a lot of possible variants
2014-12-09 04:27:23 <b-itcoinssg> amiller: With reference to non-merge mined; I may be reading it wrong, by doesn't the proposed implementation in the whitepaper only discuss scenarios where the proof of work is directly compatible i.e sha256. I understand, that as rusty pointed out, this is not set in hard stone and can/will be changed later. Just trying to clarify whether I'm reading the
2014-12-09 04:27:23 <b-itcoinssg> paper right.
2014-12-09 04:29:23 <amiller> i guess the options are: a) SHA2 merge mined, b) SHA2 but *not* merge mined, c) other than SHA2 and not merge mined
2014-12-09 04:29:48 <b-itcoinssg> amiller: ok

2014-12-09 13:01:46 <CodeShark> shouldn't bitcoind be primarily the consensus stuff? :)
2014-12-09 13:02:26 <sipa> at the very least it also has a p2p networking implementation, headers sync and block sync logic, mempool maintenance, ...

2014-12-09 13:07:13 <CodeShark> well, we sorta do..."most difficult chain"

2014-12-09 13:10:39 <sipa> yes
2014-12-09 13:10:43 <CodeShark> what are its advantages?
2014-12-09 13:10:50 <sipa> lower bandwidth, lower latency
2014-12-09 13:10:58 <sipa> (it deduplicates transactions)
2014-12-09 13:11:17 <CodeShark> why haven't we done that in the "official" protocol?
2014-12-09 13:11:43 <sipa> there are other suggested ways of doing it
2014-12-09 13:11:56 <sipa> and there's no real need: it works perfectly fine using proxies
2014-12-09 13:12:03 <sipa> of course, less deployment, but also less risk
2014-12-09 13:12:05 <gmaxwell> because there is no need to, you can just use another protocol. Matt's protocol requires a lot of per-peer state, and works best as a hub/spoke toplogy.

2014-12-09 13:13:02 * sipa wonders whether libsecp256k1 should 1) have an API where the nonce is passed in explicitly (as now) 2) an API where you pass in a bunch of function pointers to compute the nonce 3) have built-in SHA256 RFC6979 as the only way of computing the nonce
2014-12-09 13:13:19 <gmaxwell> (since it cuts out the inv process, it wastes bandwidths to get lower latency... for block relaying it gets back all the bandwidth and then some with deduplication, but to achieve that it needs memory, etc.. just a pretty different design space)

2014-12-09 13:14:46 <sipa> well clearly all 3 options are compatible with using it for bitcoin
2014-12-09 13:14:59 <CodeShark> I'd say use (3) as default but have a way to do (1) and (2)
2014-12-09 13:15:15 <sipa> CodeShark: that's just saying (2), as it's the most generic way
2014-12-09 13:15:30 <gmaxwell> sipa: (2) or (3) both achieve the objective of being hard(er) for the crypto-uninformed caller to screw up. E.g. you just include standard callbacks and people will just use them statically.
2014-12-09 13:15:49 <CodeShark> well, (3) is essentially (2) with a special prewritten nonce function
2014-12-09 13:15:51 <sipa> (2) requires a really really ugly API to do right
2014-12-09 13:16:12 <sipa> as you need to allocate state for generating nonces, even though you almost always just need one
2014-12-09 13:16:12 lclc_bnc is now known as lclc
2014-12-09 13:17:03 <gmaxwell> I am not aware of any application which would be precluded by (3).

2014-12-09 13:17:18 <sipa> hmm, maybe just pass in a counter, turning it into quadratic complexity... but who cares, if the odds are small enough that you ever need more than 1
2014-12-09 13:17:35 <sipa> main reason against (3) is code duplication; the caller needs hashing functions already anyway
2014-12-09 13:17:36 <gmaxwell> One consideration is that a (3) like interface should really be passing the message not H(message) for the message.
2014-12-09 13:17:52 <sipa> well, that makes it harder to be compatible with bitcoin
2014-12-09 13:18:05 <sipa> (not impossible, just uglier)
2014-12-09 13:18:18 <gmaxwell> I know. well.. technically... it only does in the verifier. :-/

2014-12-09 13:18:48 <sipa> let's move to Schnorr
2014-12-09 13:18:59 <gmaxwell> since except for sighash single bug bitcoin's message hash is SHA256^2()

2014-12-09 13:19:43 <gmaxwell> sipa: right but you can use sha256() and the caller can hash ahead of it. :)
2014-12-09 13:19:49 <CodeShark> the signature scheme in bitcoin should be replaceable - and perhaps we shouldn't be relying on only one for all bitcoins - since it makes bitcoin extremely vulnerable to any break in secp256k1
2014-12-09 13:20:30 <CodeShark> but given that we're using secp256k1, (3) is by far the safest option
2014-12-09 13:21:05 <gmaxwell> It is replacable. I don't see how your last comment follows. Pieters question is not really bitcoin related.
2014-12-09 13:21:20 <gmaxwell> There isn't any safty anything tradeoff for bitcoin core relative to his question.
2014-12-09 13:21:30 <CodeShark> if you want a general-purpose secp256k1 library, then (2) is the way to go :)

'more efficient' ? what are you going to do there which is more efficient than the 6979 prng that has any argument for security? it's already very cheap compared to the rest of signing. If you want more efficient, you'd want things like precomputing k^-1 and r, which would be an entirely different int
2014-12-09 13:26:01 <gmaxwell> erface not covered by (2) either.
2014-12-09 13:26:12 <CodeShark> no, consistency means that for any message and signing key we get the same signature
2014-12-09 13:26:23 <gmaxwell> (you can do very low latency signatures for things like signed timestamps if you don't mind precomputing k^-1,r.)
2014-12-09 13:26:29 <CodeShark> no, consistency means that for any specific message and signing key we always get the same signature

2014-12-09 13:27:08 <sipa> it is indeed distinguishable - but only to signers, not to verifiers
2014-12-09 13:27:18 <CodeShark> it's indistinguishable if the message is only signed once

2014-12-09 14:19:32 <sipa> too bad
2014-12-09 14:19:41 <sipa> perhaps by templating stronger, and letting the compiler do more, it can be done with one version

2014-12-09 16:15:33 <jonasschnelli> okay... and the wording is also more clear, headers=plural (in case we would deliver 1 header)

2014-12-09 18:31:04 <cfields> sipa: as for why the objects are built twice for the lib, that was just a cheat to get it done. there's not currently a good way to split the consensus files for reuse in the other binaries (making a convenience lib out of it, i mean). I'm hoping it may end up that way eventually, but imo it's not a terrible burden as-is

2014-12-09 18:33:57 <cfields> also, it's kinda nice to have them separated so we can give different flags. there's a discussion in a PR somewhere about adding much stricter warnings to libs, which is a really good idea imo
